The eCanter – E-FUSO’s first
zero emission light-duty truck

The eCanter allows customers to take advantage of a light duty electric truck that is both economical and environmentally friendly, not to mention dependable, maneuverable, and quiet, as the solution for clean urban deliveries. The eCanter is only the first of many other electric vehicles from Mitsubishi FUSO’s E-FUSO to be developed in the next several years.

The United Nations (UN) expect that 70% of the nine billion people worldwide will be living in cities in 2050. E-mobility and eco-friendliness of trucks are becoming one of the most important criteria for customers who make buying decisions for commercial vehicles. 

The emission free electrically-powered truck made by Mitsubishi FUSO is taking the lead in the advancement of the sustainable mobility market.

Industry pioneer in the E-mobility sector

The eCanter impresses with an optimized powertrain including an electric motor of 115kW, connected to the reduction gear which transfers the power to the wheels via the propeller shaft and rear axle.

The total weight allowance is 7.49t with a load capacity of up to 4.5t and is therefore exempt, for instance, from tolls in Germany. The state-of-the art battery pack consists of 100 Li-ion cells that deliver a maximum voltage of 420 V and 13.8kWh of energy per pack. The battery charger supports both AC and DC charging via CHAdeMO, SAE J1772 and the CCS type 2 interface globally. Thus, 80% of charging is possible in 1hr (DC) and 9hr (AC). The modular battery concept is adaptable to customer needs, and is produced using modern manufacturing methods.

The additional costs of purchasing an eCanter will be paid for over the first three years. The forward thinking design approach for the eCanter also compliments its technical features. The futuristic cabin design combines functionality with comfort. Driver oriented design comes equipped with 12″ displays, push start, button shift and comfortable seats. And the adaptive lighting ensures a car like ambience.

Charging is also possible on conventional sockets. The efficiency of an electrically powered vehicle fleet of eCanters gives customers the opportunity to perfectly balance load times, electricity usage rates, electricity demand, as well as the technical infrastructure. E-FUSO offers customized solutions in energy management, which are tailored to the needs of customers.

By merging elements of both digitalization and connectivity, FUSO offers a brand new interface and user experience on a 12″ tablet. Drivers will be provided with more accurate and reliable information via the new digital instrument panel. And Drive position of the vehicle can be selected by P, D, N, R.

World premiere 2017: the FUSO eCanter

E-Fuso’s first series-produced all-electric light-duty truck had its worldwide launch in New York City, in September 2017. 

The eCanter has a GVW of 7.5 tons and a range of 100-120 km on a single charge. The first small series of the eCanter was handed over to a number of customers worldwide including; in Japan, to the convenience-store giant, Seven-Eleven, and Japan’s largest delivery logistics provider, Yamato; in the United States, to United Parcel Service (UPS), and several NGOs, including Habitat for Humanity, Wildlife Conservation Society, and The New York Botanical Garden; and in Europe to DHL, DB Schenker, Rhenus and Dachser.

From FUSO Canter E-CELL to FUSO eCanter

This newest truck represents the third generation of the world’s first all-electric light duty truck. It is the culmination of steps taken to move from the development of FUSO’s Canter E-CELL small series to eCanter’s series production today.

The eCanter is built upon hundreds of thousands of kilometres of extensive fleet testing completed across multiple countries. First presented to the world at IAA 2016, the eCanter had its world-wide launch in New York City on 14th September 2017. Without large strides recently made in battery and electrical component technology, the launch of a vehicle as advanced as the eCanter would not have been possible.

The E- FUSO eCanter with its locally emission-free drive will not only relieve city centres from excess exhaust and noise emissions, but will also be an economically attractive alternative to the diesel engine. Due to lower technology costs, the eCanter can be offered at a very competitive price – thanks to lower operating costs compared to the same size diesel model – it can be paid for by customers in less than 3 years’ time.


How powerful is the electric engine?

The power of the electric motor is 115 kW with a maximum torque of 390 Nm which is available from the very first second.

Are the same transmissions available for the eCanter as for the Diesel Canter?

No, within the electric engine of the eCanter is a reduction gearbox included. It is connected directly to the transmission shaft. This means the eCanter is able to speed up to the legal speed limit for trucks without shifting. This results in less wear and constant acceleration.

How much capacity does the battery of the eCanter have?

Every battery pack has a capacity of 13,8 kWh. The eCanter has six battery packs and a total capacity of 82,8 kWh.

How much does a battery pack weigh?

One battery pack weighs 112 kg. The eCanter with a GVW of 7.49 t still offers a chassis-payload of 4.5 t.

How much time does it take to charge the eCanter?

It is possible to charge the eCanter both with AC and DC via CCS Type 2 charger (EU conform). This means it is possible to charge within one hour up to 80% capacity. Via AC it will take up to 9 hours.

How can the vehicle support the driver in his daily work?

The daily working route can be organized via smart navigation according to FUSO service center and charging stations. The connectivity system is able to scan the load directly and evaluate the free loading space to navigate the driver directly to the next loading point, to make sure the best possible occupancy rate is given.

How much reach does the eCanter have?

The eCanter has a reach of about 100 km. This is absolutely sufficient for the daily use of municipalities and house to house delivery companies according to the latest findings in our current fleet customer test in Stuttgart, Germany. In the future we will offer modular battery packs. Every customer will be able to customize the battery packs according to their needs.

With new functionalities, is the operation of the vehicle difficult?

Quite the contrary. The transmission system is now easier to handle than ever: via the push-start-button you can start the eCanter and via switches you can choose the different drive modes: P, D, N and R.

Is there any special maintenance necessary for the eCanter?

Special only in regards of a high voltage training which every technician has to participate in before working on the vehicle. Due to system constraints the parts in the power-train are nearly wear-free and very low in maintenance. Only the cooling liquid of the high voltage system has to be exchanged regularly.
